rd Art - Uniz Chuey

I am Chuey, better known as Uniz

I am an Artist, and a Tattooist

I am a practitioner of art. I like experimenting with ideas, materials and techniques.
An artist, to me, is like a historian – a visual historian.
Art historians often explore events in the life of an artist to get an understanding of the work they produced.
Echoing that, my works often reflect current social issues, or they are inspired by events that have touched me or those around me.

My art serves to raise awareness of various issues that plague society.
It does not serve to tell my audience what is right, wrong or what to think.
Its sole purpose is to provoke thought and contemplation, perhaps playing the devil’s advocate sometimes.

My influences derive from my culturally mixed background: I grew up in Singapore, where East meets West and tradition is fused with the modern.

Art is for everybody and everyone has a right to art.
I seek to bring art to the masses, and abhor the division between high art and low art.
I want to thin the line, and blur the boundaries between fine art, popular culture and functional art.
After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and art is art, whatever the price.

I am an artist based in Oxford, UK, and am a member of the Oxford Printmakers Co-operative. I am currently busy rediscovering screen printing. Other media I dabble in include drawing, painting, 3D work, graphic design and photography, and human skin in the form of tattoos.
